Palazzo Vecchio, tour of Cosimo 1 de’Medici and Eleonora di Toledo’s apartments
At the beginning of the seventeenth century. Cosimo I de’Medici, just elected Duke of Florence, renovates the ancient Palazzo dei Priori, which he elected as his main residence for strategic reasons. Giorgio Vasari will be the perfect interpreter of the emetic thought of the Duke who had placed his alchemical laboratory right inside the palace.
Vasari, as the head of a team of young collaborators, decorates the private rooms of the Duke and his wife Eleonora with a series of frescoes with secret alchemical meanings that will have their apotheosis in the so-called Sala dell’Udienza: on its walls are depicted the allegories of the alchemical work, hidden in the form of emblematic figures.
