Palazzo Pitti – The pictorial art of Pietro da Cortona among myths, symbols and allegories

The close artistic union that arose between Pietro da Cortona and Ferdinando II de’ Medici led the artist to create, in the ‘winter flat’ of the Pitti Palace, pictorial works that still today leave one enraptured by the softness of his brushstrokes and the variety of mythological subjects depicted.

The decorations in the Sale dei Pianeti and the frescoes in the Stanza della Stufa present not only extraordinary pictorial and architectural novelties, but also a hermetic thread that accompanies the viewer until he is immersed in an ancient mythical beauty.

Bacchus and Ariadne gaze at each other winking, a cupid greedily sucks turgid grapes while behind them an idyllic rural setting opens up: a magical age that still has many secrets to reveal.
