The Basilica of Santa Croce and its symbolic-alchemical treasure

When St Francis, back in 1217, found himself standing in the little church on the banks of the Arno, he certainly could not have imagined that it would be transformed into the imposing, Gothic-style Basilica of Santa Croce.

Giotto and the painters adhering to his school worked there for a long time, immortalizing on the walls of those chapels images that are still able to move us today for the expressive intensity of the faces, the secret language of the gestures and for the intimate atmosphere embracing landscapes, temples, hidden gardens and mysterious turreted cities.

The sepulchers of illustrious men, rising one after the other along the two naves, remind us of our ‘Italic glories’, while the symbolic geometries of the Cappella de’ Pazzi, immersed in the airy cloister, introduce us to the canons of an ancient beauty that still astonishes for the perfection of its lines: entering the Basilica of Santa Croce will be a unique experience, a continuous discovery of many small, great ‘treasures’.
