The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Brunelleschi Rotunda: ancient places of Art and Hermeticism
Originally, the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli was part of a large monastic complex of the Camaldolese order that saw the presence of extraordinary works created by the best artists who worked there from the 15th to the 17th century.
Cosimo the Elder was among the first promoters of “this new hermitage” that “was no longer the dwelling place of earthly Men but a true Paradise of Angels and Blessed Ones,” and from that moment art, culture and ancient wisdom made that mystical building a true Athenaeum, a meeting place for the greatest Medici exponents with literati, painters and miniaturists.
Our visit will introduce us to rediscover that forgotten beauty by bringing to light frescoes that have withstood the neglect and weathering of the centuries and then move to the Rotunda, a centrally planned building that was the brainchild of the monks to have Brunelleschi build a temple, later called the Temple of the Angels.
Today this unique building has become home to the Museo dei Medici and houses works and objects that highlight how much alchemy, science and hermeticism were in tune with the Medici Family.
