Convent of San Marco – Alchemy of color in the painting of Beato Angelico

For the greatest artists of the past, the gold of the Sun was always the basic color on which to base their painting. For Fra Angelico, gold and the art of gilding was the “wonder of wonders,” the splendor of eternal life to be constantly sought and transferred into his works.

As we enter the rooms of the Museo di San Marco, we will be captivated by the gold and the range of color tones he used, and since each color has its own vibration and symbolism, it will be a true encounter with that ancient knowledge.

Our visit will continue in the Library, in the rooms where Gerolamo Savonarola lived and finally in front of Ghirlandaio’s Last Supper, a true combination of lights, colors and symbols. Savonarola too, like the painters of the time, sought “light” but not to transpose it into painting, but to communicate it to the hearts of those who entrusted themselves to him.
